Could you trace one serial today?

Tick what you make and record. You get the records to keep, with their columns as CSV templates, and a trace test: the questions a customer, an auditor or a recall will ask, and which of them your records can answer.

The trace test

    The records to keep ()

Each record is a table. The columns are the minimum that makes the questions above answerable; add your own.

    How to use it

From a template to a record you can query

    • One row per event, not one sheet per unit. A table of material used, with one row for each lot a unit consumed, can be searched both ways. A traveler sheet per unit can only be read one at a time.
    • The same identifier everywhere. The serial or lot number in the build record must be the one in the shipment record, character for character, or the trace breaks at that join.
    • Record it when it happens. A record written up at the end of a shift is a memory, not a record.
    • Test it before you need it. Pick one shipped serial and answer every question in the trace test from your records alone. The first gap you find is the one a recall would find.
    Questions

    Traceability record questions

Does using these templates make us compliant with a standard?

No. They describe general record-keeping that makes a trace possible. Your industry, your customers' contracts or a regulator may require more, so check what applies to you.

What is the difference between tracing down and tracing up?

Tracing down starts from a finished serial and lists everything that went into it. Tracing up starts from a material lot and finds every product that contains it, which is the recall question.

Why does the recall question need assembly links?

If a material goes into a sub-assembly that is later built into a product, the product's own record never mentions the material. Only a link from the sub-assembly to the product lets the trace reach it.

Is anything I tick sent to Cargovate?

No. The tool runs in your browser and remembers your choices only in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

    Cargovate

The same trace, as one query

In Cargovate, material lots are received and consumed into units, and units into higher assemblies, so genealogy runs both ways: the as-built tree of a serial, and every unit that consumed a given lot. A unit cannot be released while required evidence is missing or a nonconformance is open. Cargovate holds no certifications on your behalf. See traceability for manufacturers.
